DISTRACTION AND THE MIND

How do you stay focused when many things around you are so distracting?

Recent research has discovered that continued input has a very significant impact on your health. Technology distracts and fragments your attention while rewiring your brain.

Anxiety, sleep disturbance, depression and psychological distress are elevated in people who use smartphones and electronically game.

Centering your attention to what is happening NOW and in the PRESENT MOMENT helps to reduce the fragmented attention distractions cause, while improving your focus.

Here are a few ideas to help keep you more focused:

1 – Observe your own behavior 🕵‍♀

How many times a day do you look at your phone? Perhaps to avoid doing something else?

Are you able to just sit quietly alone with your thoughts or do you always need a distraction such as watching YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, games, music, audio books?

Being mindful of your own behavior allows you to see yourself in action and when you notice what you are doing, it is then easier for you to change.

2 – Detoxing from Social media 💻

Do you find yourself endlessly scrolling through your Facebook or Instagram feeds? like A lot?!?! ⁉

Having a break away from that will help you to become more productive. Give yourself a break for a week by removing the app from your phone and take not of how productive you get and how you feel.

If needing to use Facebook as part of your work, use a new profile that will only be used for your job related tasks so that no one elses feeds distract you!

3 – Meditation 🧘‍♀🧘‍♂

Meditation helps to calm and relax you, while also improving your own productivity. 🌈 A recent study found that meditation improved focus and how the brain worked with performing tasks on test subjects who were hooked up to an EEG.

It is hard to start a new habit such as this one, so start small and slow then build it up 🙂 👍👏

1st week – 3 minutes per day of deep breathing
2nd week – 5 minutes per day of deep breathing
3rd week – Use a meditation app such as Headspace: Meditation & Sleep or a Guided Meditation that you like on you tube to help you to meditate for a short while each day. 🙌💭🎇
