Cabbage for healing stomach ulcers

Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable belonging to the Brassica genus of plants (along with broccoli, kale, and cauliflower).

Loaded with many nutrients it is usually eaten raw, juiced, fermented and steamed. Cabbage has been linked to health benefits such as decreasing inflammation, weight loss, hormone balancing, detoxing and gut health improvement.

Ulcers…

Gastric ulcers affect many people from all over the world. Its cause has many factors, such as helicobacter pylori, alcohol, stress, smoking, improper diet, and / or continued use of NSAIDs

A human study on people with peptic ulcers were treated with fresh cabbage juice, the average time of those with duodenal ulcer were healed after about 10 days, and those with gastric ulcer, their average healing time was about 7 days. 1, 2

Some more recent studies were conducted on rats and showed that both garlic and cabbage could be used to heal gastric ulcers. 3

What is so great about cabbage?

Cabbage contains an amino acid called glutamine, that helps to enhance the stomach mucosal lining and improve blood flow into the stomach – this in turn helps to heal existing ulcers and prevents new ones.

A great way to have cabbage, if juicing is to mix it with other vegetables such as carrot juice and apple juice. Just remember that juicing removes the fibre and other health benefits of the plant, (such as feeling full, increasing gut health, blood sugar balancing and cholesterol reduction) so the best way to have cabbage is whole, either as a coleslaw, sauerkraut, or a stuffed cabbage dish.

Just keep in mind…

High amounts of cabbage (with it being a goitrogen) can alter thyroid function by inhibiting iodine transport, so those that are hypothyroid – it can slow things down a bit. This is mainly in raw cabbage.

For people with IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome), raw cabbage usually produces gas and is high in fructans, IBS sufferers have trouble digesting fructans. Raw cabbage may cause stomach pain, diarrhea and bloating in those with IBS. However, fermented cabbage such as sauerkraut was shown to improve symptoms in people with IBS by altering gut bacteria. 4, 5
